Do you need local antivirus?

We have posted on this blog before that you should not be paying for local antivirus if you are using Kibosh to protect your network. You don’t need to. Because in addition to our propriatary pronogrpahy filtering, Kibosh delivers Enteprise grade Malware, Phishing, Torrent and illegal proxy blocking.

Having worked as Network Engineer for over 20 years, I believe that the only way to really protect your devices these days is with a service like Kibosh,or OpenDNS which blocks access to the bad stuff before you access it. Local antivirus starts working after you’ve accessed the bad stuff. And don’t get me started about the useless ‘web filter’ option these antivirus companies have started offering. I’ve yet to see one that blocked any bad content, but they do proxy all of your data, including HTTPS, through their servers. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a lawsuit yet.

Also, why are many antivirus suites free? How can anyone build a successful business giving away free antivirus, or anything else for that matter? I’m not sure, but i don’t think it can be done. So, they are making money somehow. Maybe selling information about you like AVG does?

An antivirus app has complete access to your operating system – deep level kernal access, and if this antivirus app is compromised in any way your basically toast. How would you ever know? You wouldn’t unless you detected some odd behaviors on your computer.

Anyway, the world is catching on to the downside of using local antivirus:

If you are running Windows use Security Essentials (XP, 7) or Windows Defender (8, 10, +). If your running Linux or OSX you probably don’t need local antivirus.

Bottom line, with Kibosh on the job you don’t need to pay for an antivirus product.

Be wise. Be safe.

What constitutes a quality Internet content filtering solution?

When we shop for a Parental Control solution what should we be looking for? There are many companies selling some form of Parental Controls, and they all do it differently; some are software only, some are hardware only, some are a combination of the two. The plethora of solutions should give you an idea of how difficult it is to pull this off, and by ‘this’ I mean block Internet pornography.

From the end user, or Parent’s perspective we don’t really care how it’s done as long as it meets the following criteria:

  1. Blocks pornography (web, image and video)
  2. Does not inconvenience
  3. Does not slow down our Internet
  4. Is easy to setup
  5. Does not require baby-sitting, or persistent maintenance
  6. Gives some sort of insight into what’s going on, i.e. activity logs

Today we are going to focus on #1, because the rest are peripheral ‘nice to haves’ that only matter if #1 works, and this is the hard part anyway.

So when a company says they have a ‘comprehensive’ web filter, what does that mean? It’s actually pretty easy to ascertain for yourself. Go to, or and search for any term, and you will get 3 – 6 tabs of Internet content matching your query.

The tabs that contain Internet content are Web, Image and Video. These are the ones that would return pornography if it is searched for.

Any Parental Control, or Web Filtering, or Internet Content Filtering solution you choose should at the very least protect these three categories of content.

Today the most effective way to protect Image and Video content is by enforcing SafeSearch. There are other ways, but they are currently too technically difficult to pull off without major inconvenience, and cost to end user.

Let’s use OpenDNS as an example. They have 50 million users and market themselves as a Parental Control solution. With OpenDNS Family Shield enabled, using Bing / Google you can search for a bad term. That’s the first problem. With Kibosh you can’t even search for a bad term, but back to OpenDNS, post pornography search, we then click on a link under the Web category. Here is where OpenDNS shines, and any websites listed here will be blocked. Great. However, I then click on the Images tab, and viola I have access to the insanity of Internet pornography. Same with the Video link. Not good.

If hardcore Internet pornography is so easily accessed do you really have a ‘comprehensive’ Parental Control solution? Does it matter if you can see daily log reports, or monitor if the device is online, etc. if the actual blocking of pornography doesn’t work?

Therefor the first thing we should look for in a parental control solution is does it filter Web, Image and Video content. Everything else is secondary.

Kibosh customers have the best parental control / web filtering solution on the market today. It’s easy to turn on, requires no ongoing maintenance, is very affordable, and filters Web, Image and Video content.

Education is key

“Internet pornography will create an epidemic of obsession, compulsion and addiction that will sweep across America like a tidal wave, destroying marriages, families and individual lives with a devastation never before witnessed in the history of this great nation!” Mark Kastleman, The Drug of the New Millennium

Kibosh exist for the sole purpose of solving the problem of Internet pornography in a sustainable way. When Kibosh Cloud is enabled, and SafeSearch Lock-in activated, access to, and the searching for Internet pornography is eliminated.

The Kibosh Cloud web filtering service is the best content filter in the world. Our categories are proprietary, and it enforces SafeSearch which is the only way to prevent pornographic images from being searched for. If you don’t have SafeSearch enforcement with your existing solution then you don’t have a filter you can trust.

However, as good as Kibosh is, it’s just a tool, only part of the complete solution. It should to be used in conjunction with education, and a ‘mental reboot‘ to be truly free. Kibosh will give you an Internet porography free world to live in, but you need to take action too.

If you have a user that does not fully appreciate the Kibosh filter, i.e. they fight against it’s use, then they don’t fully understand how damaging Internet pornography is on their lives. This is where education is key, and it’s the kind of education you won’t find in the MSM, or unfortunately brick and mortar schools. Knowing is half the battle, and once enlightened the path will be clear.

Here are a few places to start:

Internet pornography is especially damaging to young men and women because research shows ‘that our most powerful and lasting memories arise from adolescence – along with our worst habits’. YBOP

There is also a growing body of evidence suggesting Internet pornography is as addicting, if not more so, than traditional drugs like cocaine, or alcohol.

“Addictive drugs like meth and heroin are compelling because they hijack the precise mechanisms involved that make sex compelling – dopamine.” YBOP

Cambridge University scientists find that those with drug addiction and sex addiction have similar neurological responses

”There are clear differences in brain activity between patients who have compulsive sexual behavior and healthy volunteers. These differences mirror those of drug addicts.”

The good news is that you have a tool at your disposal to legitimately block pornography from your homes and / or businesses. Something we didn’t have for a long time.

The Kibosh Cloud Filtering Service is a sustainable solution. By sustainable we mean you only need to enable the service, and then move on with life. Problem solved (as well is it can be). Any other solution like ours, and currently there are none, can only be as good, technically speaking, as Kibosh.

Any Internet content filtering / parental control solution that requires your contstant attention is not sustainable long term. Kibosh Cloud was designed to be as ubiquitous, and easy to use as the Internet. Our dream is a world where services like Kibosh Cloud are the default protection for every Internet connection. A world where the mental wellbeing of our future generations come first.

Kibosh Cloud customers should not be paying for local antivirus of any kind. In the past we’ve recommended Microsoft’s Security Essentials, but they’ve since stopped supporting that in favor of Windows Defender which only works on Windows 8 & 10.

So for those of us still using Windows XP , Vista or 7 we’ll need to find another local antivirus. When searching for an Antivirus solution please keep the following points in mind:

  1. Kibosh Cloud provides an excellent layer of malware, and phishing website protection. It blocks the site before you get to it, so it will block phishing email links, thus preventing the downloading / installation of malware.
  2. You only need local antivirus. You do not need any other feature all Antivirus companies try to upsell you. Let’s use the popular Avast as an example. It’s free to download and use, but be prepaired for the hard sell of ‘Internet Security’, ‘Email Protection’, and ‘Pro Antivirus’. You need none of these addional features, just use the ‘Free Antivirus’.
    1. What is ‘Internet Security’? It means they are sending your data through their servers and it’s being logged. Email security? Same thing, they are scanning all of your emails to give you protection. If you have a private domain with your own email address (i.e., non gmail, yahoo, live, etc) then maybe Email Security would be something to consider, but for the vast majority of us who use one of the popular, free email services like gmail – they already scan your email and block the bad stuff.
  3. Antivirus, once installed, has intimate access to your operating system. It must to provide the protection you need. Thus Antivirus is a highly desireable target for the ‘bad guys’.
    1. Is your Antivirus Software Vulnerable to Attack?
    2. Antivirus is dead: Long live Antivirus!
  4. The biggest points of threat on your Windows devices is in fact the third party apps like Java, Flash, Adobe, etc. All these apps are regularly asking you to install updates to block new, known, attacks. Keep them updated.

In summary, with Kibosh Cloud protecting your devices you only need a simple, free local antivrus for that added layer of security, but there are trade offs. Personally we still use Security Essentials + WinPatrol (the free version) + Kibosh Cloud.

How to host a public facing Minecraft server in 15 min

Recently my son asked me if he could play Minecraft with his cousins, and if I would setup a server. This guide will show you how to quickly setup, and host a Minecraft server that is accessible from anywhere in the world.

Preface: these instructions apply to all version of the Kibosh router firmware, however these firewall settings are only accessible from the Kibosh Router Management Utility (KRMU), not from

Any computer that will run Minecraft can host the server.

  1. On the computer that is going to host the Minecraft server, start Minecraft, create a new world, then open to LAN. Once you open to LAN you will have a port number. Write this down.
  2. Log into your Kibosh router at
  3.  Go to Status, Connected Hosts and find / copy the IP address of the computer hosting the Minecraft server.
  4. Go to Firewall > Individual Port Forwarding
  5. Create a rule like this:
    1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.06.28 AM
  6. Save Changes.
  7. Now we need to give everyone who wants to join our Minecraft server an address + the port number we wrote down. There are a few ways to skin this cat:
    1. The simplest way is to give them your Kibosh DDNS address and port number:
      1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.19.41 AM
      2. Your Kibosh DDNS is as follows: [KRMU ID]
        1. NOTE: What’s good about using your DDNS is that although the underlying WAN IP will change at some point, the DDNS name never will.
        2. NOTE: Your KRMU is labeled under your router.
    2. Or you could ping your account DDNS – [KRMU ID] and give them the WAN IP:
      1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.13.36 AM
        1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.23.53 AM
    3. Or you could go to Google and search for ‘what is my wan ip’

That’s it, now anyone in the world with a live Internet connection will be able to join this server. Easy peazy.

  1.  If there is a local firewall make sure you turn it off (Windows is usually turned on so go into Control panel and turn it off).
  2.  Each time you create a new server, and open to LAN the port will change. You’ll need to change it in the KRMU > Firewall > Individual Port Forwarding rule we created above. It’s super easy to do:
    1. Original port:
      1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.30.22 AM
    2. New port
      1. Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.30.06 AM
    3. Don’t forget to Save Changes.

Never 10

Hi Everyone,

Many users of Windows 7 and 8.1 are happy with their current version of Windows, and have no wish to upgrade to Windows 10. There are many reasons for this, but among them is the fact that Windows 10 has become controversial due to Microsoft’s evolution of their Windows operating system platform into a service which, among other things, aggressively monitors and reports on its users activities.

Never 10 is an easy to use utility which gives you control over whether your Windows 7 or 8.1 will upgrade itself to Windows 10. Never 10 will permanently remove the annoying upgrade reminders!

Get Never 10 here.

Never 10 does not install, it simply runs when you execute it, does it’s job, then goes away.
